South West Ireland - West Ireland awaits
The South West of Ireland is regarded as one of the great golfing destinations in the world, rightly famed for the quality of its magnificent links, but also recognised for some outstanding parkland territory.
Like Cork Golf Club, one of Ireland oldest and most prestigious clubs, that owes much to the genius of Mr. Alastair McKenzie, who re-designed the layout in the twenties. Nearby is Fota Island which has hosted the Irish Open and is regarded as one of the finest in the country.
Special mention has to be made of The Old Head at Kinsale - surely one of the most spectacularly located golf courses in the world. Concentration on golf is a prerequisite, as the views can be the cause of much distraction.
Ballybunion is regarded by many as the finest links in the world. Tom Watson has written
It is a true test of golf, a course you will always enjoy and never
tire of playing
The options are awesome, with Waterville a towering links, Arnold Palmer's Tralee links is widely recognised for the beauty of its location. That can be said of the other many famous courses, not least the Killeen & Mahonys Point layouts at Killarney and the Ring of Kerry in Kenmare, parkland courses of the utmost grandeur. Included in this group must also be the Robert Trent Jones Senior layout at Adare Manor Hotel.
In the early 1890's Old Tom Morris built some of the holes at Lahinch, which are still there, a testament to Dr. Alastair McKenzies expertise when he redesigned some of them in 1920's. Closeby is the highly acclaimed Greg Norman designed links at Doonbeg, a testament to Greg's great love affair with links golf.
